What is Peer Support?

Peer Support Specialists are individuals with lived experience in recovery from substance use, mental health challenges, or co-occurring disorders. They are specially trained to offer support, guidance, and resources to help others on their recovery journey. Peer support is not based on clinical diagnosis or psychiatric models.  Instead, it is based on four central tasks: Connection, Worldview, Mutuality, and Moving Towards.

Connection

Connection

The first, and core task of peer support is connection. It’s that magical moment when we realize someone “gets is”, and hence, gets “us”. It is the beginning of building trust.

Worldview

Worldview

Often misinterpreted as pure “knowledge”, Worldview in Peer Support seeks to understand not just “what” we know but “why” and “how” we came to that knowledge or belief. Cultural background, family history and individual life experience combine to make up our own personal worldview.

Mutuality

Mutuality

A key element to peer support is Mutuality. This task seeks to re-define “help” as a co-learning and reciprocal process. As opposed to having things done for you, peer support works with you. Both parties come away having learned, and grown.

Moving Towards

Moving Towards

Traditional mental health often focuses on moving away from the problems and issues at hand. In Peer Support we look forward to accomplishing goals and getting to where we want to be in life.
